How healing happens at Roots
You don’t have to figure this out alone!
If things at home feel overwhelming, we’re here to listen and help you understand your options. Roots offers compassionate, non-punitive care for teen girls, with support for the whole family from the very beginning.
All of our therapy programs are tailored specifically to help adolescent girls through their recovery journey.
We aim to treat the root causes of social, environmental, psychological and relationship issues
Behavioral health issues are complex. We believe in treating the whole child (and the whole family!), not just the symptoms. Through our strengths-based, trauma-informed care, our goal is to identify and heal the underlying causes of substance use and mental health challenges, whether it be trauma, a physiological/medical concern, environmental issue, or complex relationship dynamics.
Evidence-based therapies
While at Roots, our clients will receive weekly individual counseling, daily group counseling with their peers, and time for journaling and clinical assignments, not to mention the services that come with our Family Program.
Our clinicians rely on the following evidence-based therapies and programs to address the needs of our clients and families:
- Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
- Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
- Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR)
- Somatic psychotherapy
- Harm reduction
- SMART Recovery
Family Program
A principal guiding factor of Roots is to treat the whole child, which includes the family unit. With the understanding that substance use and mental health challenges create (and are often created from) difficult family dynamics, your family will receive the following services while your child is enrolled in our program:
- Parent one-on-one sessions with child’s therapist
- Full family sessions once weekly
- Individual check-ins with siblings as needed
- Parent support groups
- Parent education groups
- Sibling support groups
- Family Intensive Weekend (a one-time weekend event meant to inform, instruct, and inspire)
Trauma-Informed Care
Trauma-informed care is a way of thinking about and treating clients as whole individuals with life experiences that care providers may or may not be aware of. Trauma-informed care switches the focus from asking “What is wrong with this person?” to “What has happened to this person?”
Asking “What has happened to this person?” allows our care providers to think not just about what is happening with your daughter right now, in the short term, but also how previous experiences may impact her health and what she needs out of a treatment experience.
Our clinicians will use emotion-focused family therapy (EFFT) and structural family therapy throughout the course of the program.
We also contract with local music therapists and art therapists in order to provide these treatments in a group setting.
Our daily schedule is based on Dan Siegel’s Healthy Mind Platter, a neurobiological concept that suggests humans need seven different types of “time” per day in order to function optimally.
The goal is simple… ethical, effective, evidence-based care for our clients that leads them back to the core of who they are and equips them for life.
