Hands-on horse therapy guided by clinical goals
Family-focused care for lasting healing at home
Families often find Roots Renewal Ranch while searching for equine therapy programs, horse therapy programs, or residential treatment centers that offer equine-assisted therapy for teens. But most parents are really looking for something deeper: a safe, structured place where their daughter can slow down, build trust, and begin to heal in a way that feels real.
What Is Equine Therapy?
Equine therapy (also called equine-assisted therapy or equine assisted psychotherapy) is a form of experiential therapy where clients work with horses as part of their healing process. Instead of sitting in a room talking, teens engage in hands-on experiences like:
- Grooming and caring for a therapy horse
- Leading and communicating with horses
- Practicing boundaries and trust through interaction
- Reflecting on emotional responses in real time
Horses are highly intuitive animals. They respond to energy, emotion, and behavior instantly—making them powerful partners in therapy.
This creates a unique opportunity for teens to:
- Develop healthier relationship patterns
- Build self-awareness
- Practice emotional regulation
How equine therapy works at Roots
At Roots Renewal Ranch, equine-assisted therapy is fully integrated into our residential treatment program for teen girls—not treated as a separate activity.
On-Site Equine Therapy
Girls work directly with horses on our ranch in a structured, therapeutic environment. Sessions are guided by trained staff and aligned with each client’s clinical goals.
Off-Site Therapeutic Riding Program
Each week, clients participate in a 3-hour equine therapy experience through our partnership with Riding Unlimited, working with a licensed equine therapist.
Equine therapy sessions may include
Classroom Learning
- Horse psychology and behavior
- How horses respond to human emotion and energy
Hands-On Experience
- Grooming and tacking
- Direct interaction with therapy horses
Ground-Based Horsemanship
- Leading and guiding horses
- Practicing nonverbal communication and boundaries
This structure allows girls to learn, apply, and reinforce new skills both on the ranch and in a new environment.
What does equine therapy help with?
Many parents come to us after trying multiple approaches—therapy, outpatient programs, or even short-term stabilization—without lasting change.
Equine therapy helps teens with:
- Emotional Regulation: Horses respond immediately to dysregulation, helping girls learn to calm themselves in real time.
- Confidence & self-efficacy: Successfully working with a 1,000-pound animal builds real confidence—not surface-level self-esteem.
- Healthy Boundaries: Teens learn what it means to give clear signals, respect space, and communicate effectively.
- Trust & Connection: For girls who struggle with relationships, horses offer a safe, non-judgmental way to rebuild trust.
- Self-Awareness: Patterns show up quickly—and naturally—without confrontation or shame.
Equine therapy for teens with complex needs
Our equine therapy program supports girls struggling with:
- Anxiety and depression
- Trauma and PTSD
- Emotional dysregulation
- Self-harm behaviors
- Substance use
- Low self-esteem and identity challenges
- Family conflict and relational breakdown
Because horses mirror emotional states, this work is especially effective for teens who:
- Resist traditional talk therapy
- Struggle to trust adults
- Have difficulty expressing emotions
More than horse therapy—A clinical tool for real change
At Roots, equine therapy is part of a broader evidence-based treatment model, including:
- DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy)
- CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy)
- Trauma-informed care
- Family systems therapy
- Experiential therapies
Equine therapy helps bridge the gap between what a teen understands in therapy and how she actually shows up in real life.
This is a key part of why our program focuses on whole-child, whole-family healing rather than surface-level behavior change.
